In the Middle Ages in Europe, the issue of sex was complex and controversial, as the church had a huge influence on society and imposed strict moral standards on sexual life. However, despite this, the evolution of sex in the Middle Ages did occur, and several key aspects can be identified in it.

First, it is worth noting that in the Middle Ages, sex was seen not only as physical satisfaction, but also as a means to strengthen social position and personal status. Marriages were often entered into not for love, but for reasons of politics, economics and social status. However, sex within marriage was considered acceptable and even encouraged, as it was a means of procreation and strengthening family ties.

On the other hand, sex outside of marriage was viewed extremely negatively and was severely punished. Church anathema, prison, fines - these were ways to control people's sexual behavior. Adultery, adultery and prostitution were considered sinful and subject to the most severe punishments. Nevertheless, despite all the prohibitions and restrictions, sex outside marriage still existed and was widespread.

Medieval literature and art also contain much explicit imagery and themes, suggesting that sexuality was an integral part of medieval life. Sexual images can be found on church frescoes, manuscripts, sculptures and other works of art of the time. They show that sex was perceived as a natural phenomenon and part of human life.

It is also worth noting that in the Middle Ages, sexual practices were quite varied and even exotic. For example, the use of aphrodisiacs, astrological methods of birth control, medical techniques to improve sex life were all common during those times. There were also various taboos and prejudices regarding sex, such as those related to a woman's monthly cycle or sexual orientation.

Thus, we can conclude that the evolution of sex in the Middle Ages was a complex and multifactorial process. Despite the strict prohibitions of the church and the moral standards of society, people's sexual lives continued to develop and change. Sex in the Middle Ages was an important and integral part of people's lives, and analysis of historical sources allows us to better understand the diversity of its manifestations and significance in the social life of that time. It is important to remember that each era has its own characteristics and its own attitude towards issues of sex and sexuality, and studying the historical context allows us to better understand their meaning and significance in the modern world.
