The translator, who in 2020 won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, added to the magazine that he decided to quit smoking during the covid pandemic because "I'm at an age where nothing good comes out of it."
"I think joy was a later discovery, later in life," he admitted. "I was always going with the flow, drifting one way or the other. I think I've spent years with sluggish depression, and it wasn't until I embraced it, trying to embrace all sides of myself, beauty and ugliness, that I was able to capture those moments of joy."
