Condom application might seem straightforward, yet it appears that many individuals are not utilizing them correctly. An analysis of approximately 50 studies on condom usage revealed numerous prevalent mistakes.
Timing Matters
Shockingly, up to 50% of individuals put on a condom only toward the end of sexual intercourse, providing no protection against sexually transmitted infections. Similarly, about 44% remove the condom before completing the act, risking both STDs and unwanted pregnancies.
Application Errors
A concerning 25% of men unroll the condom completely before wearing it, leaving a question mark about its effectiveness afterward. Additionally, a significant number—around 45%—are unaware that leaving space at the tip of the condom is crucial. Almost half of women and over 40% of men admitted to not squeezing air from the condom tip before use.
Reversal and Unfolding Dilemma
Surprisingly, 30% of partners attempt to wear the condom inside out initially, later correcting it for use. Meanwhile, 11% of women and 8% of men acknowledged not fully unrolling the condom before initiating intercourse.
Packaging and Inspection Negligence
A notable 11% of users open condom packets with sharp objects, potentially damaging the condom's structure. Moreover, a vast majority—82% of women and 74% of men—admitted to never checking condoms for damages before use.
Lubrication and Storage Concerns
Around a quarter of couples do not use lubricants, risking condom breakage during prolonged use. Furthermore, 3% of women and 4% of men use oil-based lubricants with latex condoms, weakening the latex and increasing the risk of damage.
Improper Storage Practices
Disturbingly, up to 3.3% have reused the same condom, and about 19% store condoms incorrectly—exposed to sunlight or in a wallet where the latex could deteriorate.
Safe Handling and Purchase Tips
Condoms should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, making a pants pocket an unsuitable long-term storage location. It's vital to check expiration dates when buying condoms, preferably from a pharmacy to minimize the risk of expired products.
