Clarifying Misconceptions
It's believed that during menstruation, the increased blood flow to the genitals can enhance sexual arousal, making it easier to achieve orgasm. Hence, a woman's desire for sex during her period is entirely normal. Yet, there remain several myths surrounding this topic.

Gynecologist Dr. Julia Olenska-Shpakevich aims to dispel these myths, emphasizing the importance of hygiene during intercourse and the comfort of both partners.

Myth: Harmful Effects of Sex During Menstruation
There's a prevalent belief that engaging in sexual activity during menstruation might lead to endometriosis. However, Dr. Olenska-Shpakevich asserts that this is not the case.

The truth lies in the increased risk of contracting STIs during menstruation due to the partially open cervix and the environment of menstrual blood, facilitating the spread of infections within the reproductive system.

"Viruses like HIV, Hepatitis B, and C can also spread through blood. Using condoms minimizes these risks," notes Dr. Julia Olenska-Shpakevich.

Myth: Minimal Risk of Pregnancy During Menstruation
Contrary to popular belief, intercourse during menstruation can still result in pregnancy. Sperm can remain active in a woman's reproductive tract for up to 5 to 7 days.

Therefore, if the menstrual cycle lasts for 25 to 26 days, with menstruation occurring for 5 to 6 days, and sexual activity happens on the 5th day of the cycle, pregnancy is possible if ovulation occurs on the 11th to 12th day of the cycle.

Myth: Painful Intercourse During Menstruation
Quite the opposite—sexual activity during menstruation might reduce pain. This occurs due to the release of endorphins and oxytocin into the bloodstream, and the uterine contractions during intercourse may even decrease the duration of menstrual bleeding days.
