Comparing the intensity of sex and workouts in the context of weight loss always attracts attention. Many wonder how sex compares to intense physical exertion and what aids in shedding excess weight. Recent research by scientists from the University of Montreal has provided intriguing findings that allow for a comparison of energy expenditure during sex and exercise.

There is a belief that sexual activity can burn between 100 to 300 calories for each participant. However, no prior studies have compared these figures to the energy expenditure during physical exercise on the same individual. Researchers sought to address this question.

According to the experiment results, the average energy expenditure during a single sexual act was 101 calories for men and 69.1 calories for women. Comparing this with data gathered during a 30-minute jog at a moderate pace, where men burned 275 calories and women burned 213 calories, researchers concluded that sex can be considered a "moderate" form of physical activity.

Thus, in terms of calorie expenditure, workouts prove to be more effective for weight loss than sex. However, it's important to remember that individual factors and preferences play a significant role in determining which type of activity suits a particular person.

Physical Aspects of Sex: More Than Just Pleasure

Sex is not only a source of pleasure but also a physical activity that can impact the body. Experts assert that the preparatory stages of sexual activity can be likened to warm-up exercises in sports. They accelerate heart rate, stimulate brain cells and nerve endings, and actively expend carbohydrates, sugars, and starch to maintain increased blood circulation and temperature.

The act of sex is highly individual and depends on the temperament of both partners. It can be compared to cardio exercises of moderate and low intensity, with a heart rate of 60-70% of maximum. At times, sex can even be likened to high-intensity interval training, pushing the body into an anaerobic energy mode.
