By collecting data on human sexuality for a decade, in 1953. Kinsey published a book called "The Sexual Behavior of the Human Woman." Among other things, in it, Kinsey argues that masturbation in women is normal, that vaginal orgasms are not the only way to, and that women are as capable of strong sexual desire as men; All statements are contrary to the then accepted "medical" beliefs.

The book quickly became a bestseller, but not everyone was a fan. Some said that Kinsey had such a medical view of sex and woman that his scientific work could easily talk about a sheep rather than a woman. The ensuing public outrage put an end to Kinsey's research, but for the first time he suggested that nymphomania was not a "woman's disease."

Nymphomania emerged as a concept in medicine in the 18th century, and in the 19th century it became a psychiatric diagnosis for highly sexual women. The "symptoms" included insatiable sexual hunger, aggressive behavior toward men (or women), and the most shocking act of all: masturbating.

The male version of the diagnosis was called "satyriasis" (by the ancient Greek mythological creature Satyr), but it was rarely applied, since even then it was somehow strange to imagine a man wanting too much sex.

Originating from Latin, nymphomania literally means "nymph" and "madness". It was believed that a woman's strong sexual desire, even for her husband (not to mention a man to whom she was not married!) could be an indicator of a serious illness. The reasons for developing nymphomania were countless: drinking alcohol, reading too many books, sexual attraction to another woman, divorce or frigidity.

The "treatment" that was prescribed to nymphomaniac sufferers was utterly worse than any disease that could have been nymphomania putting leeches in the vagina, ice baths, bedridden, and even surgically removing the clitoris or ovaries! In 1886, Dr. Theophilus Parvin recommended more humane therapy through regular exercise and a vegetarian diet combined with vaginal cocaine intake.

Miss B, a 24-year-old woman who was threatened with admission to the asylum, only because she had the audacity to enjoy sex with her husband three or four times a night. She avoided "treatment" by giving up sex, alcohol, reading novels, and meat. She also had to do vaginal lavages with borax, a substance that cleanses the canals nowadays.

The World's Obsession with Nimforma

The sexual revolution helped normalize behaviors once considered scandalous, so women were no longer expected to be nuns. Nymphomania, along with oral sex, masturbation, and homosexuality, was removed from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) only in the 1980s.

These days, it's more than clear that sex is a human thing and that women are human. Those who do not have sex drive are more likely to receive a psychiatric diagnosis.

Modern nymphomania - hypersexuality and addiction to sex

In the 20th century, the notion of nymphomania as a "disease" began to fade after Magnus Hirschfeld, Marie Stoops, and Masters and Johnson argued that women's sexual desire was a normal part of human sexuality.

Today, we are not talking about nymphomania or satyriasis, instead we are talking about sexual addiction or hypersexuality - a condition that can affect both sexes, but is seen more often in men than in women. And since it is difficult and subjective to define how much is too much, it is usually considered a deviation behavior that interferes with normal lifestyle, the formation of healthy relationships and functioning in society. Or simply put, if you have sex 8 hours a day and you're not a actor or sex worker you have a problem!

Over the past ten years, many politicians and celebrities such as Russell Brand and David Duchovny have sought treatment for sexual addiction. And although hypersexual disorder is considered to be included in DSM, many medical professionals and scientists doubt that it really exists.
